Writhlington Year 8 boys team took on Holyrood Academy in the County Cup.
On a bobbly and marshy pitch in places we struggled to get the ball down and play proper football like we wanted too. The first half was tough against a very physical Holyrood side. With many missed opportunities and a few misjudged decisions the first half ended at 0-0.
The lads came out raring to go in the second half knowing they were the better team in this game. Now accepting that the long ball game was our best option , Barkley and Jimmy were able to show skill on the ball. Still missing the finishing touch , Holyrood were starting to put some lofted passes behind Writhlingtons back three. After a deflection the ball went out for a corner for Holyrood, after a fumble from the keeper and a scramble in the box the Holyrood number nine netted the first goal of the game. Showing true spirit and hardwork the lads conjured a beautiful piece of attacking play and Ethyn tucked away the equaliser for the boys in blue. The lads did well to grind out the half with a few missed chances themselves. The game finishing one all.
Onto the penalty shoot out.
Penalties were taken by George, Elliot, Ethyn and Jimmy with all penalties scored. This meant sudden death; Alfie stepped up and slotted away the penalty. Holyrood’s number 10 stepped up and the shot was picked out the right hand side by Alfie. A well deserved win by Writhlington.
Next game is the quarter final vs. St Katherines (North Somerset).
